After knocking my beloved Logitech Squeezebox off my nightstand, I was in the market for a new radio. I resolute to give the Grace Mondo a shot, and it was well value it. From a distance, it looks extremely similar to the Squeezebox. Even up close the radios looks extremely alike. The finish on in cooperation radios is an identical gloss black. The Mondo comes including a remote, which was an option on the Squeezebox. If you're in the market for a Wi-Fi radio, The Grace Mondo is an excellent choice.

The Mondo is the same shape, slightly larger but the face layout is nearly identical: lecturer on the left, little display on the upper aptly (Mondo's is a little larger but the resolution is the same), round dials, rows of buttons for preset stations.The difference is when you get quicker. The Squeezebox almost screams `high end'. Both boxes are fake but Mondo's is `cheap clock radio' finish while the Squeeze has a sleek, beautiful finish and it kept it so after 2.5 being of operating the kitchen. Add to that the beautiful, much higher pixel density Squeezebox display and we have a clear winner.SETUP AND OPERATION (Squeeze)The Squeezebox `just worked', almost literally within seconds of plugging it and it worked well for the past 2.5 being. It immediately recognized our Wi-Fi network and once the password was entered it was ready. The Mondo seemed to be confused by our Wi-Fi Cisco range extender - thought it found two networks with the exact same name. Then, it spent a lot of time updating itself, rebooting...The controls are nearly identical. Dials that you turn to cycle through menu selections and push to excellent, buttons that you keep pressed to associate them with your selection.The menus are a tie only because the Squeezebox options are so many and the menu tree so deep you now and again get lost. Mondo offers a lot fewer selections and it can be now and again easier to perform simple tasks but the way things are organized doesn't always make sense - why is the weather forecast under `Internet Radio', aptly after College Stations? I don't know.While the Squeezebox does almost instant play, whether it's Pandora or approximately station in Australia, the Mondo spends a good chunk of time downloading and buffering. Switching from one task to another is a gamble. Last time I tried to move from Pandora to a radio station the display told me that it was trying to found a 'gateway'. It never did and I had to unplug it. Restarting played the radio station without gateway issues but I don't like unplugging my radio when I want to listen to a new station.FEATURES (a tie, probably)The Mondo has a few things going for it. There are 10 preset stations vs. only 6 at the Squeezebox and it displays the stream's quality, a capability that I actually missed on the Squeezebox. While the Sqeezebox alarm setup options are orders of magnitude above Mondo's, the Mondo comes with a `snooze' button on the top, just like the clock radios. Very convenient.The Squeezebox wins hands down when it comes to the sheer number and variety of air force (dozens for the Squeezebox vs. about five at the time I'm writing this for the Mondo) with the ability to, for develop, play Flickr or Picasa slideshows thanks to its superior display.Finally, the Mondo comes with a remote control while the Squeeze doesn't. The remote control looks 'cheap' but I score this as a major clear for the Mondo. Mondo's controls both on the box face and on the remote are Pandora-optimized.RELIABILITY AND PERFORMANCE (not Mondo)Mondo's software seems to be in call for of a major overhaul. I see a near unanimity of 5-star reviews full of praise for the Mondo but I can only provide my own views.As ungrateful as it could signal, given that I didn't have to pay for the Mondo, I will say that I don't like it that much. Amazon's 3 stars stand for "It's Okay" but the Mondo is not. It could become so, possibly after its software is updated to ensure more reliable operation. Until then, it's a 2-star which stands for `I don't like it' yet.

I have owned other internet radios, including a Sanyo R227 and have used iPod Touch and smartphones to listen to internet radio. I once used Sirius XM in the house for a couple of years (still use it in the car). I've had countless FM radios, shortwave radios, high-sensitivity AM radios, and even many scanner radios. But none could provide the width and depth of in rank and entertainment that this unit does -- and as easily as it does it. In the end, the Mondo will pick up just about no matter what thing in the planet, including each single AM and FM station anywhere near me (and it knows what those are from your IP take up). It can tune in thousands upon thousands of podcasts. It can easily find and provide any kind of music you want, including many channels without advertising. I am an OTR (old time radio) fan -- not the music, but the drama, comedy, western, sci-fi, mystery, and other shows from the 30s owing to the 50s. Scores of internet broadcasters provide non-stop OTR around the clock, and by loveliness's link with Reciva, I can quickly find and save many old-time broadcasters to listen to on the Mondo. (I was introduced to Reciva with the Sanyo, and it has a user-friendly, efficient, uncluttered website that lets you quest for and try out tens of thousands of stations with your home computer, and then program them into your Mondo.) Aside from internet channels, there's Pandora, the free music (and comedy) system that works very well on the Mondo, enabling you to create customized channels in almost infinite variety. "Modest things" I like:* The bright, colorful screen (not boring like monochrome, text-only screens -- which are so 20th Century and difficult to read)* Earphone jack on side headed for front; if you use radio bedside, as I do, and listen to radio at night with an earphone, you want it to be easy to connect and disconnect earphones; radios with plugs in the rear are just awful for this.* The ability to use a battery (even if the required optional battery, in my opinion, is overpriced). It's very cool to be able to easily move the radio and enjoy its sounds anywhere within range of your wi-fi. There is a built-in finger handle to make carrying easy.* Size: Not too big, not too small. Just right.* Controls: work smoothly, solidly and do not feel cheesy.* Volume control: It's a knob atop the set, an odd location, but at least it is a knob instead of those irritating, hard-to-use buttons found on many sets, including the Sanyo.* Pandora: This radio works very well with Pandora, and even has the ability to thumbs up/down selections (even if now and again I get a message that the thumbing benefit is not available -- don't know why).* NOAA: Many of the VHF weather channels have been preprogrammed into this unit so you can listen to NOAA weather broadcasts all over the country (and Canadian versions, too). Unfortunately, a few are miscalibrated. When I try to listen to the Connecticut NOAA station that's listed, it returns a Minnesota station.* Remote: Unit comes with a remote, which you might think is unneeded, but which I use a lot, especially for the fact that it has all 10 memory keys; the radio itself has only five plus a shift key to get you 6 to 10. Some public complain it's too big; I like the size. The modest ones, like the Sanyo remote, are easy to lose.* Input and output jacks, if you want to increase its sound quality or usefulness.* Complex: It was really quick and easy. Things that could be better:* Sound: It's good, clear and crisp -- and, of course, digital -- but I wish it were a bit richer. The sound is modifiable, by the way, with a modest equalizer.* Buttons, such as memories, must be backlighted. This is a splendid bedside radio -- but that earnings it may be used a lot in the dark. (I find myself by the remote in the dark because the keys are light-colored, and the screen gives off enough light so I can see the keys!)* Screen fonts: could be bigger for my geezer eyes. On many channels, including Pandora, you are told what is playing, but if your eyes ain't splendid, you have to get up close.

Dar.Fm is an intriguing option folks must look into if they like talk radio but have a busy schedule (I'm a political talk junkie and I love that functionality!).Is it value the money? Unfortunately, that is the bottom line that Viners have to try hard to keep in mind, and I have a very hard time accepting that internet radio lonely, something a $200 netbook or a PS3 or many TVs can do, is value the fee of this device.
